What fun! Get to know Pickleball in Nuremberg

Content

You have to play it yourself!

Pickleball is a completely new ball sports that has been created from elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis and is characterized by one thing in particular: It’s so simple that literally everyone can get started! Our courts in Nuremberg offer the best conditions for all-round fun pickleball matches. You can simply borrow the equipment on site.

Pickleball: So easy to learn!

It usually doesn’t take more than five minutes for you to get the hang of it! You don’t need to attend an extra course to play Pickleball. Pickleball is a relatively simple sport that can be learned quickly, especially if you already have experience with other backstroke sports such as tennis, table tennis or badminton. But previous experience is not a must. To get started, you can get instructions from us at the Sportcentrum Nuremberg.

It’s a lot of fun!

Pickleball has many features that make it the perfect fun game for teams of friends, colleagues or families. The basic rules are easy to understand, which makes it easy even for younger children to get into the game quickly. The courts are smaller than in tennis, which requires less running and is therefore a lot of fun for players of all ages and fitness levels.
For all its simplicity, pickleball also offers scope for sporting ambition and strategic moves, which really makes the fun complete.

Intro

Rules and equipment: Pickleball is that simple

Pickleball can be played in pairs or doubles, with doubles being the most common way to play and literally twice as much fun – mixed-age or mixed-gender teams are possible, neither of which play a role in pickleball.

The aim of the game is to score more points than the opponent by hitting the ball over the net into the opponent’s court in such a way that the opponent cannot return the ball or make a mistake, just like in other backstroke sports.

Pickleball is also played at our sports center in Nuremberg on a rectangular court with a net in the middle, similar to tennis. The only difference is that the court is much smaller, with around 4 pickleball courts fitting into a tennis court. The running distances are therefore short and the game is all the more sociable. Each team’s court consists of 3 zones: the left and right sides (=”boxes”) and the “volley-free zone” (=”kitchen”) 2.13 meters from the net.

The game is played with a special racket and a perforated plastic ball (pickleball). Pickleball rackets and balls can be borrowed at the Sportcentrum Nürnberg. The appropriate nets (91 cm high) are of course also available from us.

The game begins with a serve. The player in the right-hand box always serves first. The player stands behind the baseline and plays diagonally over the net into the opposite court. The serve is made from below the hips. The ball must land behind the opponent’s “kitchen” line.

Normally, each team may serve twice in pickleball, i.e. each team member may serve once. The exception is the start of the game, when the serving team may only “serve” once. The game is always switched when points are lost, whether within the teams or between the teams.

The serve is followed by the rally. The ball may be returned with or without touching the ground. Except for the serve, where the ball must land once in the opponent’s court and then again in the service court.

If a point is won, the players of serving team A change boxes. The serve remains with player 1. If the team loses the point, player 2 of the team may serve. After losing another point, the serve switches to the other side to team B.
A game is won when a team reaches 11 points first, with a lead of at least two points.

Important: Only the serving team can score points! Points are scored if the opposing team receives the ball out of bounds, allows the ball to land twice in their own court, does not observe the “kitchen” rules, the ball hits the opponent’s body or lands in the net.

Caution: Anyone who violates the so-called “kitchen” rules makes a mistake and either gives the other team valuable points or the next serve.

  1. Volleying from the air is not permitted within the “kitchen” zone. The “kitchen” line (2.13 from the net) may not be touched or crossed when hitting the ball from the air.
  2. A player who has successfully returned a ball hit out of the air but then accidentally stumbles or falls into the “kitchen” zone will also be penalized.
  3. Only if the ball lands or will land in the “kitchen” zone may the “kitchen” line be crossed in order to return the ball. After hitting the ball, both feet must be behind the line again.

Pickleball Nuremberg – FAQ

Pickleball is a fun rebound sport from the USA that combines elements of tennis, table tennis and badminton. The speed of the game is moderate, but the action is dynamic. It is played on a smaller court and is easy to learn.

Absolutely! Pickleball is a beginner’s sport that inspires players of all ages and fitness levels. At Sportcentrum Nürnberg, children from the age of 6 can play pickleball as part of our children’s multisport offer.

Since the health of our athletes is particularly important to us, we use wooden sprung floors for the flooring because this type of flooring is particularly elastic and therefore healthier for the players. Joints and muscles are subjected to much less stress than on wooden floors, for example.

We provide the court, net, pickleball rackets and balls on site at the Sportcentrum Nürnberg, but you can also bring your own equipment and our team will be happy to help you choose the right equipment.

Pickleball racket: Choose a racket that suits your playing style and level. Pay attention to the weight, balance and grip of the racket to ensure a comfortable playing experience.

Pickleball balls: It is advisable to keep several pickleball balls with different speeds and qualities on hand. High-quality pickleball balls offer better flight quality and durability.

Shoes: Wear sneakers with good cushioning and a non-slip sole to improve your grip on the court and prevent injuries. The sole should not rub off.

Sportswear: Choose comfortable sportswear that allows you to move freely. Wear breathable materials to effectively wick away sweat and prevent overheating.

The duration of a pickleball match can vary depending on various factors such as the game format, the level of the players and the number of sets played. A singles match usually lasts between 20 and 45 minutes. A doubles match can last longer, typically between 30 minutes and an hour, as there are more players on the court and the rallies can be longer.

No, Pickleball is suitable for players of almost any age. We have players from 6 to 80 years old!

At the Sportcentrum Nürnberg you will find the best conditions for your pickleball match in Nuremberg: professional courts with healthy flooring, a friendly team to help you with any questions, fresh air, and a sociable bistro.

Absolutely! Pickleball is usually played in doubles or mixed doubles. Compete with friends or family. Tournaments are also possible!

The court size is the same for singles and doubles matches and corresponds to that of a badminton doubles court, with the exception of the service line (non-volley line), which is 15 cm further away from the net.

Points are only scored by the serving team. Games are normally played to 11 points and can only be won with a two-point lead. The first serve of each team always comes from the right half of the serve.
